The Hangout PDX

After School Visual Arts Program

Our Mission

To enrich lives through the arts, teach our kids new ways of seeing the world, build confidence and competence in artmaking, and foster life-long friendships along the way.

The Program

We designed The Hangout with your kid in mind. We believe that kids should love their after school care and come home excited to talk to you about all the things they have created and learned.

We offer your child the freedom to make their own choices, explore new ideas, engage socially, and learn and grow! Whether it’s writing their own code, making a comic book, painting, playing a board game, or filming a stop-motion animated film, the choice is theirs.

Everyday, our teachers will help facilitate artmaking opportunities that align with your child’s interest, as well as teach daily art lessons that challenge our kids to explore new territory in the arts!

Flexible Scheduling

The Hangout is a program rather than an after school “class.” You only sign-up for the days you need and our teachers and mentors work with your kids to create an after school experience they love!

Kids Get to Choose

The Hangout is a space where kids K-5 can hangout, engage with friends, stimulate their minds with creative activities, and learn self-direction. More of a club than a program, we provide a wide variety of arts, crafts, games, and technologies - and we support our kids as they follow their own interests! We say yes to every creative (and safe!) idea and allow our students to really stretch the limits of what they know to be possible in art.

Where Every Kid is Welcome

We want every kid who walks in the door to know that at The Hangout, they are welcome, safe, and free to explore their creative minds while making new friends! We are a hate-free zone where making art is our game and making friends is our mission. All friends are welcome regarless of race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, immigration status, religion, or disability.
